Remembering Two Civil War Boys Who Never Made it Home




This page was created to pay tribute to two of my Civil War relatives who never made it home. Please take some time to reflect on their lives, honor their sacrifices, and, hopefully, help keep their memories alive.



PVT. JOSEPH HACKENBERG


  • CO. F, 184TH PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY


  • Born November 6, 1841, Snyder Co., PA 

  • Son of Peter and Catharine "Katie" (Kuhns) Hackenberg


  • Enlisted March 4, 1864, at Centreville, PA

  • Mustered in May 12, 1864


  • Captured June 22, 1864, at Jerusalem Plank Road


  • Throughout June he was taken to Richmond and Lynchburg


  • Arrived at Andersonville Prison, Georgia, November 1864


  • Entered Andersonville hospital on November 8, died November 9, 1864

(some say died November 8) of diarrhea/scorbutus (scurvy)


  • Buried Andersonville Cemetery as "I. Hockinbridge", no state listed


He was twenty-three years old.

PVT. ISAAC RIEGEL


  • CO. I, 49TH PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY


  • Born July 1846, Snyder Co., PA

  • Son of Jacob B. and Sophia (Wagner) Riegel


  • Enlisted February 26, 1864, at Harrisburg, PA

  • Mustered in February 26, 1864


  • Killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, May 10, 1864


  • Isaac is not listed with the Union dead in the Fredericksburg cemetery, nor is he buried in his family cemetery, so he may still lie on the field


He hadn't yet turned eighteen years of age.
